Pantone 2016 Colors of the Year

It’s become a tradition that we wait for with baited breath. Each year Pantone selects a color of the year. And, 2016 is o different than previous years. This year, however, a dynamic duo of color has been selected. Drum rolls please… the Pantone 2016 Colors of the Year is Rose Quartz and Serenity. These colors represent the softer side of life, as they are both muted pastel colors. Rose quartz is a really light pastel pink while Serenity is a “cooler tranquil blue” Paired together, they have an uncanny symbiotic relationship with each other as they reflect “connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace,” said Leatrice Eiseman Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute®. How great would it be to have a year full of that in 2016? An interesting reason for selecting this pair was the “gender blur” that is being experienced in different parts of the world. This has had an impact on all facets of design. Designers are...

FIT Pet Fashion Success: Abby Kass, Founder and Designer, Les Pets en Voyage

Many people like to pick up travel souvenirs for friends and family when they take a trip. For those who consider their pets a part of that circle, there is Les Pets en Voyage, which specializes in travel souvenirs and gifts for pets and their parents. Founded by Abby Kass in 2011, a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) Pet Product Design and Marketing certificate program, the company has made a big splash. Not only have its products been featured at FIT’s Fashion After Bark pet-fashion show, the 2011 Pre-Westminster Fashion Show and Gala and the Fox and Friends Beggin’ Parade, it has also garnered coverage from Fido Friendly and Gift Shop magazines and News 12 Connecticut’s Pet Talk, among other outlets. It all started back in 1983, when, on a trip to London, Kass had trouble finding a pet-friendly memento of the U.K. capital for her beloved Schnauzer, Windy. Even a trip to the pet section of the famed department store Harrods left her disappointed....

FIT Pet Fashion Success Story: Randi Warhol, Polydactyl

Cats have long had to make do with less-than-creative toys than dogs. While pups get to toss around objects that look like just about any type food or object they crave, most cat playthings fall into two categories: mice and fish. Randi Warhol, owner of the cat-toy company Polydactyl, and a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)’s Pet Product Design and Marketing Certificate program, is changing this landscape. Through Polydactyl, she creates organic-catnip-infused cat-toy replicas of Chinese-food sauce containers, sugar packets, popcorn (inside an old-timey movie-palace bag), Valentine’s Day chocolate in heart-shaped boxes and other beloved human treats. Her designs are highly realistic, with cool pop-art feel.     Warhol, who has two cats, Bowie and Elliot Smith, launched Polydactyl in 2009 because she was tired of the lackluster, uninspiring cat toys she saw on the market. “I wanted to make toys out of objects that people see every day, but for cats,” she says. “I wanted to make something you can’t really reproduce, and can’t...

Ten Pet Fashion Tips by Jorge Bendersky

NOTE: This post is written by Celebrity Groomer Jorge Bendersky Walking our dogs is not longer just about their sanitary breaks, it is part of our social schedule. Who we see, how the dogs looks is part of most pet lovers kitchen table or social media chat. Here are some essential things to remember before going out for a strut around the hood.   Tip #1: Wipe your dogs face with regular saline soliton (Eye wash) or with luke warm left over tea, this will not only remove the morning boogies, but prevent the growth of bacteria and avoid that sad puppy face. Be sure to wipe around his eyes again after the walk. Dogs tear ducts are very small, and doesn’t take much to irritate them.   Tip #2 Nobody goes outside with a pillow head!!!!!. Brushing your dog before going out for a walk, will not only help with the look, it is the perfect time to “Train for Beauty”. If your dog is not a fan...

FIT Pet Fashion Success Story: Karine Ng, Central Park Pups

Having just completed her Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) Pet Product Design and Marketing certificate, Karine Ng is already one of its most successful alums. While still taking classes, she launched Central Park Pups, which offers dog clothing that reflects New York City’s chic, sleek style while emphasizing safety and comfort. Ng’s flagship product is the Hidden Harness, a dog coat with a built-in step-in harness that makes it simpler to dress pups (and willing cats) for a walk. Ng got the inspiration for the Hidden Harness one winter in New York City, where she lives, while walking her beloved Shih Tzu, Chewie. She noticed how bulky and uncomfortable-looking it was for dogs with harnesses to wear clothing. “The owners had bought these really nice coats and sweaters for their dogs, but had to cover them up with the harnesses,” she recalls. “It didn’t look the way it was meant to look.” She also thought about how long it took to outfit Chewie for a walk, and wanted...

Trade Show Tips From A Trade Show Groupie

I admit it! I am a trade show groupie. There is nothing I love more than walking the floor to discover new talent and re-connect with my favorite vendors. Exhibiting at pet industry trade shows is a great way to gain exposure, sell more products and stay up on the competition. That being said there are factors to consider and a lot of advanced planning to do in order to ensure a successful show, and the maximum amount of exposure. Here are some trade show tips for the first timer!   Do Your Trade Show Homework! First, you should familiarize yourself with the different pet industry trade shows, and how they may best showcase your enterprise. Make a point to attend them all and decide which works best for your product line.
